Coffee & Tea

  • Peace Coffee Shop

The best coffee I've ever had. Their super tasty "Birchwood Blend" (made specifically for my favorite restaurant, Birchwood) got me through my college finals. Their cafe has a pleasant atmosphere, calm and quirky with lots of space and few people there. Another tick in their "best ever" box is that they deliver everything by bike as a part of their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint!

  • Spyhouse Coffee

Close to my alma mater MCAD, Spyhouse has a kitschy cute atmosphere with 50's atomic furniture and giant doors that open up the entire cafe when it's nice out. Go when class is in session and have Spyhouse to yourself.

Shopping

  • Hunt and Gather

Best resource for found vintage goodies, oddities, and art projects. Most of my weird furniture (like a triangular book shelf) came from Hunt and Gather and was sad to leave it when I moved to NYC.

  • Mall Of St. Paul

Technically not Minneapolis, but still awesome, Mall of St Paul is an antique store with low prices and no shortage of thneeds.

Food

  • Birchwood Cafe

Tastiest menu with locally sourced ingredients and the aim for a non-existent carbon footprint. My personal favorites are their savory waffles for breakfast and their black bean burger for dinner. Peace Coffee makes a special blend just for them, so be sure to order the "Birchwood Blend."

  • Marla's Caribbean Cuisine

The best Caribbean food I've ever had. Marla's is a bit of a hike, but that sweet potato pie is totally worth it.

Bars

  • Donny Dirk's Zombie Den

My favorite bar in Minneapolis! Hidden in an industrial area, Donny Dirk's has amazing cocktails like "Switchblade Sister," "Sasha Grey," and my favorite "The Donny Dirk"; great atmosphere with horror movies playing in the background and doctored taxidermy heads; the most badass bouncers with faux (?) bloodstains on their crisp white shirts. Stay until bar close and watch their laser light show, complete with fog!

  • Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge & Tiki Garden

Owned by the same woman as Donny Dirk's, Psycho Suzi's is a multi level tiki-themed bar with flaming cocktails and "trailer trash" snacks.

Adventures

  • Haircut

Denny is a huge art advocate and always has amazing pieces on the walls. I long for those haircuts.

  • Bike Ride Around The Lake

Lake of the Isles is the quietest, most scenic lake in Minneapolis and perfect for a quick lap around on your bike.
